The Circus with the Duisburger Philharmoniker
Cineastic highlights under the stars await the guests of this year’s Stadtwerke Sommerkino, and the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra will also be part of the party again in 2023; not as usual for the opening, but as the crowning finale of the summer open-air series in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. Under the direction of Stefanos Tsialis, the Philharmoniker will play live the music of one of the most turbulent flicks in silent film history: “The Circus,” Charlie Chaplin’s second feature-length masterpiece after “The Gold Rush” (1925), in which the gifted comedian shines - as he so often does - not only as actor, screenwriter, director and producer, but also as his own film music composer. Dissatisfied with the original version of the film, released in 1928, Chaplin resumed his plan for a new score in the late 1960s and single-handedly composed a new score reflecting the snappy sounds of his own vaudeville past. A musical-cinematic feast for the spirited musicians of the Duisburg Philharmonic.
